Yosemite Valley: Nearly touching the clouds, the El Capitan cliff proudly reigns over the Yosemite Valley, standing over 3,000 feet from base to summit. To the right is the thundering Bridalveil Fall, originally called "Pohono" (Spirit of the Puffing Wind) by the Yosemite Valley People, the Ahwahneechee tribe. Yosemite was designated a national park in 1890, largely through the work of John Muir, pioneer of the American conservation movement and Father of the National Parks. His efforts helped preserve nearly 750,000 square acres of Central California wilderness.
