Message on back:
The weekly comics - or "funny papers" -have long been a Sunday morning tradition. Since the 1890s, young and old have been delighted by the Sunday funnies,, and the immense popularity of this newspaper section was further enhanced by bright, cheery color that brought the beloved comic strips to life. One of the earliest characters was the Yellow Kid by R.F. Outcault, who also created Buster Brown, followed by the brilliantly surrealistic Krazy Kat by the poetic George Herriman. Frederick Burr Opper's hilariously drawn comic strip about a jovial gent named Happy Hooligan popularized the idea of sequential panels with speech balloons floating above protagonist's' heads. As the Sunday paper continued to get plunked down on porches and doorsteps across America, eager readers went to Mars with Flash Gordon, gobbled spinach with Popeye, and vainly tried to kick a football with Charlie Brown-who was no relation to Buster. - Craig Yoe, Cartoonist and Comics Historian "See you in the funny papers!"
