Owning your first car has been a rite of passage for teenagers in America-possibly rivaling your first job or even your first kiss. Cool cards, with rounded hoods and gleaming chrome, tail fins and custom flames, came to symbolize the 1950s as much as blue jeans and rock 'n' roll. Here, a group of Midwestern boys look under the hood of the used 1951 Mercury Eight Coupe that 16-year-old Kerry Granger purchased with $360 of his hard-earned cash. As soon as Kerry got his new car home, he and his buddies opened the hood and checked out the powerful Flathead V8. Then, Kerry drove a girl he knew to get Cokes-his first real date.
