Message on back: A bevy of smiling women sporting sailor stripes and pilot caps have fun in the California sun while taking a spin in a runabout—a fast wooden powerboat introduced in the 1920s. The waving women are helping to promote the joy of boating in Long Beach Harbor at the 1928 Pacific Southwest Exposition. From July 27 to September 3, more than a million Los Angeles residents and tourists descended upon the Exposition, which celebrated this rapidly expanding coastal city. Built in 10 weeks, Long Beach featured “palaces” of commerce, cultural attractions, amusement rides, motorboat races, a sailing regatta, and a schooner that served as a floating restaurant.
