Stargazers since ancient times have marveled at the wonder of comets. These bright, heavenly "broom stars" were seen as one-time supernatural events that signaled great change. In 1701, English astronomer Edmond Halley declared that one such comet had appeared at least three times before, and accurately predicted its next visit. Halley's Comet returns to our night skies on average once every 76 years and has been traveling around the sun for perhaps as long as 200,000 years. In 1910, astronomers photographed the comet for the first time, while superstitious citizens rushed to purchase umbrellas and anti-comet elixirs, fearful that the Earth was to pass directly through Halley's 15-million-mile tail. By 1986, the world was struck by Comet Fever, and T-shirts, novels, stamps, coins, and teaspoons tapped into the excitement. Companies promoted trips to southern locations deemed optimal for viewing, while the entire state of Florida billed itself as the best place in America to witness the iconic event. Halley's Comet is expected to reappear in the summer of 2061.
