FIRST SPACEWALK - February 7, 1984
Almost 800,000 feet from Earth, NASA Astronaut and Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II makes the first-ever untethered spacewalk in history. After graduating from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, McCandless logged over 5,000 hours of flight time as a US Naval Aviator, taking part in the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. One of the youngest astronauts to join NASA, McCandless had the honor of serving as CAPCOM-mission control capsule communicator-for the Apollo 11 mission, communicating directly with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as the two astronauts took man's first steps on the moon and world listened in awe. Here, we see McCandless wearing a nitrogen-powered jetpack that enabled him to propel more than 300 feet from the space shuttle Challenger. "It may have been a small step for Neil," said McCandless, "but it's a heck of a big leap for me."
